Tips on Hiking the Path of the Gods, Amalfi Coast

If you’ve read my post on the best things to do in the Amalfi Coast and are interested in hiking the Path of the Gods, here are some tips.

1. The length of the trail is about 5 km, or 3 miles.

2. The trail is not that difficult. I’d wear shoes with support, and you can certainly wear hiking boots though they may be hot. You’ll see people walking it in flip flops, but I wouldn’t recommend that either. The end of the trail is 200 m lower in elevation than the start of the trail, though of course there are ups and downs.

3. Plan on hiking for about 2.5 hours from the start of the trail at Bomerano

4. The best time to hike the trail is in the morning, since you’ll have the best views of Capri. Don’t hike it in the middle of the day unless you’re okay with the sun beating down on your head. Another good time to hike it is in the late afternoon, but check what time the sun sets and factor in enough time to get off the trails before dark. A big bonus of hiking it in the afternoon is that the sunset is specatcular.

5. Unless you have a good map or have lots of daylight and lots of energy, consider hiring a guide for the trail. As this woman describes, it’s somewhat easy to take the wrong path and is not fun to get lost. I highly recommend Giovanni from www.giovis.com

6. Don’t hike the trail on Sundays, because it’s when the Italian hiking groups (Club Alpino Italiano) go and the trails are busy.

7. Consider eating at Montepertuso or Positano at the end of the trail. Or bring a picnic – there are tables and benches along the way.
