day or so visiting Sirmione, a picturesque town at the end of a peninsula which juts a couple miles into Lake Garda.
Soak up the lake and mountain scenery (see photo) or book a spa treatment using local thermal waters piped up from the spring at the bottom of the lake.
Admire the picture-perfect 14th century Scaligeri Castle (see photo), complete with moat. I think it’s more interesting from the outside, but for some good views visit the inside of the castle too (closed Mondays).
From the center of town, walk 30 minutes or take the electric train to visit the Roman ruins Grotte di Catullo (closed Mondays).
If you’re traveling with kids: consider visiting one of the nearby sandy beaches, or ride the rollercoasters at Gardaland or one of the other amusment parks on Lake Garda.
As with any waterside attraction in Italy, in warm weather Sirmione – and Lake Garda in general – can be crowded, so plan accordingly.
