Booking Italy Travel During COVID-19
Cancellation Policies
At Italy Beyond the Obvious, we charge consulting fees for our time and expertise. (You can check out our table of services and pricing here.) This allows us to be incredibly flexible to create a completely tailored Italy experience. Also, travelers have a big advantage because we can cancel everything we book – we do not sell package tours.
- We require a 50% deposit of fees up front; the remainder is paid after the itinerary is complete.
- If the trip is cancelled, all fees paid are credited to a future itinerary. No additional fees will be due if we are booking exactly the same itinerary.
- If the trip is cancelled due to COVID, there are no cancellation fees.
- If the trip is cancelled due to non-COVID reasons, there is a cancellation fee of 15 USD per travel day.
- During COVID-19, we will only book completely refundable hotels, guides, and drivers as far as possible. That way, if we need to cancel the trip, you the customer do not lose any money.
Travel Insurance during COVID-19
In order to provide the best Italy COVID-19 information, let me say up front that “cancel for any reason” travel insurance does not necessarily include pandemics. Here is what we suggest:
- We’ll book completely refundable hotels, excursions, train tickets, and drivers
- Book completely refundable flights
- We recommend getting medical travel insurance. We can help with that.
- Ideally don’t bring valuables with you to Italy, but if you have a really expensive camera or computer or bike that you must bring, you could buy travel insurance to cover it.
- Beyond that, you need to read the small print on travel insurance. If we’re working together, we’ll help you find the best option for travel insurance.
Health & Safety in Italy during COVID-19
We only work with vendors in Italy who follow health and safety COVID-19 protocols. The hotels we book, the local guides we use, the drivers we hire – and more – are all people and organizations we have had relationships with for years. We are happy to provide our travelers with detailed information on each vendor as we create your custom trip.
And one more thing – Italy is so grateful for tourism that they have been extremely keen to adhere to proper procedures and get back to normal as soon as possible.
Italy COVID-19 Information: Current Status
The best way to get the most current Italy COVID-19 information is to check local websites. Here are some that we recommend:

- Italy’s regions are color coded red, orange, yellow, or white, based on COVID-19 cases (red is bad, white is great). For an updated status by region, check this website.
- For information on which tourist attractions (and more) are open, check this website.
- To get notified while in Italy about whether you’ve been exposed to someone who may have been infected, download the immuni app.
- You’ll need to fill out this self-declaration form upon arrival in Italy.

A few more things to keep in mind regarding Italy COVID-19 information…
If you’re a nervous traveler, we recommend waiting until things have returned to normal. But if you’re on the fence, and just want to be safe, consider the following:
